Another Journal Quilt and a UFO finally finished

I've been so busy quilting the last couple of weeks I've neglected the blog. This is one of the pieces I finished recently. It's another journal quilt for the Aus/Nz Artquilters Group. We don't necessarily have to do the monthly themes in order so this is actually the June theme - The Centre. These journal quilts are A4 size and quite fun to work on.

As I was doing this I remembered a quilt top that I did many years ago along similar lines and never really finished off so I dragged it out and was inspired to finish it. The background green is piece I hand dyed. The black border was sewn around it and then I printed with grevillea leaves using gold fabric paint. The 'woven' bits are actually cut from the one piece of fabric that I dyed and appliqued after the printing. I felt it didn't stand out from the background very well in places so I ended up couching a heavy metallic thread along the edges. The title is 'Unravelled'. I'd love to hear your comments.

I love your 'Unravelled' quilt - the light yellow in bottom corner is like a little sunbeam of warmth. Glad you decided to finish it! And thanks for details on how you made it.

I love the colours in the journal quilt. Well done for finishing off a ufo. How did you do the woven technique out of 1 piece of fabric? It looks intriguing.

Both are extraordinary. How big is the second one? I really like the rich colors in the journal one.

Thanks Helen
The strips are not actually separate strips although they could be done that way. The strip design was marked onto one piece of hand dyed fabric as large as the quilt. The 'gaps' between the strips cut out to reveal the green/black underneath and needle-turned hand-appliqued down. Almost like Hawaiian applique. What was I thinking!

The quilt is 114cm (45") x 86cm (34") This was a 15 year old UFO. I started it in 1994 did a bit of quilting on it then left it. I'm just finishing off another one from the same era. Show you soon.
